Young Composers Competition

This season the GSYO will once again hold a Young Composers Competition! Goals of this program are to encourage creativity through musical composition, to bring new music into the Youth Orchestra’s repertoire, and to grow awareness of the GSYO in the musical community. In 2015, the winning composition A Pilgrimage by Scott Shea (Page High School class of 2015) was premiered on the May GSYO concert and was recorded on the GSYO’s studio album Taking it Home. Scott and the GSYO were featured in a segment by Fox 8 WGHP and in a piece by the Greensboro News & Record.

This year’s winning composition will receive a public premiere in Greensboro on the May 2017 Youth Orchestra concert, as well as a recording by the Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra (live or studio, TBD). The winning composer will be invited to and recognized at the premiere. The contest is open to any student in North Carolina up through 12th grade, whether or not they audition for GSYO. The deadline for entries will be January 31 and the application/information form is downloadable here.
