Event #12:  May 17th, 2014 6:30-9:30 pm:
Water Sales at Westover Church for GSO Pops Concert “Broadway Spectacular”

Selling water at the Greensboro Symphony Pops Concerts is a fun and profitable venture!  Parent and student volunteers man tables at each pops concert and sell bottles of water  before the concert and during intermission.  The Symphony patrons and the church staff are very appreciative and supportive.  The patrons enjoy talking with the student volunteers and sometimes give much more for a bottle of water as a donation!  Click here to sign up! “Sign me up!”.

Event # 13 & 14:  May 18th, 2014 Spring Concert, 4:00 p.m. and
Annual Awards Banquet at 6:00 pm at the Greensboro Day School

Friends of GSYO volunteers help in many ways to make the GSYO concerts a little more special.  Volunteers can sign up to sell Spirt Items, sell flower bunches to friends and families of the musicians, help with concert CD orders, assist with portraits, bring snacks and water for the members for dress rehearsals and more!  Click “Sign me Up!” to be a part of this special event!

Immediately after the Spring Concert, plan to celebrate a memorable year with the GSYO by attending the Spring Awards Banquet!  All GSYO members (Opus One, Youth Orchestra, Youth Philharmonic and Flute), their parents /guardians and families are  invited to a banquet and award presetation.  Tickets will be sold for this event to offset the cost of the food.  Click the “Sign me up!” link to sign up and help make this event spectacular!

Examples of needs and volunteer opportunities:

Flowers, decorations, Conductor and Manger gifts, donation box;  Spirt item sales, banquet help;  CD sales; Surveys; Banquet Coordinator, Banquet ticket Check off and guides for guest traffic into the cafeteria, banquet floaters, bring desert, paper goods, utensil and drinks, decorations, ect. Also, Senior Bio and gift giving presentation coordinator, audio-visual set up, and MC; Water and snacks for rehearsal and banquet.

Done!  Event #1: August 23, 24, 25 and September 6,7,8 GSYO Audition Volunteers

Auditions will be held at the Cultural Arts Center, 200 N. Davie St., Greensboro. For specific audition information, go here.

Friends volunteers will be helping with all aspects of the GSYO auditioning process. Instrumentalists can help tune, direct students to the audition room, and be there to answer any questions that may arise. FGSYO volunteers can help check in students and gather the right forms and monies involved with auditions. We need volunteers to provide water and snacks and someone to take lunch orders for the conductors and staff.   Also, FGSYO members can help with general questions parents may have during the audition process.  Click the link “Sign Me Up!” to sign up for the dates and times that you would like to volunteer for.

Done! Event #2:  September 15, 2013 1:00 pm: Parent Meeting at UNCG School of Music

Sunday, September 15th is the first rehearsal for the ensembles of the GSYO!  Rehearsals are in the Music Building at UNCG. Before the rehearsals start, there will be an informational Parent Meeting for all the GSYO Ensembles, which include:  Youth Orchestra, Youth Philharmonic, Opus One and Flute Ensemble. The Parent meeting will be held in room 217, which is located to the right as you enter the Music building from the parking deck side.  Click here for some tips about Parking at UNCG School of Music.  At the 1:00 meeting, the Education Manager for the Greensboro Symphony, Peter Zlotnick, will briefly review GSYO policies, tuition, and forms.    Around 1:30, or when full-group announcements are done, the ensembles will split up and the conductors will cover ensemble-specific announcements, in their  respective rooms.

When the ensembles start their rehearsals, all Parents and Guardians of GSYO members are invited to chat with the Friends group about fundraising, chaperone and volunteer opportunities back in room 227.  We will also go over informational topics like the role of the Friends of the GSYO, communications from the Friends Group, how parents can be involved with GSYO activities, Fall Retreat, and Spring Trip.

Done! Event #3:  September 28, 29, 2013: GSYO Fall Retreat at Camp Weaver    http://campweaver.org/

Each year, all members of all ensembles participate in a retreat for intensive rehearsals and as a way to get to know one another better. Attendance at the retreat is mandatory for all ensemble members and parents/gaurdians who wish to chapeone the Spring 2014 trip to Chicago must chaperone the overnight retreat.  Students must bring their instrument, music, a pencil, and a music stand.

For members of the Youth Orchestra, the retreat is an overnight stay. The Youth  Philharmonic retreat is held during the day on on Saturday and Opus One and Flute Ensemble members will join the retreat on Sunday. The retreat takes place at YMCA Camp Weaver, which is located just southeast of Greensboro.  Be on the lookout for more detailed information from the GSYO Educational Manager.

Friends volunteers are needed in many capacities to make the retreat possible.  One of the biggest needs is for  adult male and  adult female chaperones to stay the night in the cabins with the youth orchestra members.  We also need volunteers to guide students to the parent pick up area for the Youth Philharmonic, Opus One and Flute Ensemble participants.  Other opportunities for help are:  Snacks, Drinks, sales help, registration help and activity coordinators.  Click “Sign me up!” to volunteer for this great weekend!

October 5:  GSYO at War Memorial for the first Greensboro Symphony Orchestra Concert of the 2013-2014 Season.  Beforethe concert, GSYO group invited to gather at Stamey’s.
