Youth Strings is a string orchestra for students who play at the level of Suzuki Books 2 and 3. Students will focus on technical, musical and ensemble skills in an environment with students of similar age and level. Repertoire includes educational arrangements and other works that will both challenge and motivate continued musical growth.
The size of Youth Strings is between 20 and 30 students. Youth Strings rehearses Sunday afternoons at the UNCG Music Building, Room 110, 2:00-3:20 p.m., and gives two to three public performances per year. Youth Strings also participates in a half day of the annual GSYO Fall Retreat. This ensemble does not tour but has participated in day trips and orchestra exchanges! Tuition is $200 per year, and scholarships are available in cases of financial need.
Prospective Youth Strings members should:
- play solo repertoire at the level of Suzuki Book Two or Three.
- be able to read music in keys including 2 sharps or flats, at the level of their current technique.
- be able to play in a section, including staying together with others and following a conductor.
