Auditions for the 2011-2012 season are complete. The requirements listed below are for reference purposes.
For Youth Orchestra:
• 2 scales of the student's choice, 1 major, 1 minor; three octaves for violin, viola, and cello, two octaves for other instruments.
• Auditionees may be asked to sightread.
• A short solo of your choice, no more than 2 minutes in length minutes in length (specific guidelines for Flute, Violin, Horn, and Percussion are listed below)
• Orchestral Excerpts (for woodwinds, Horn, Trumpet, and Percussion only; see below)
In preparing orchestra excerpts, auditionees are strongly encouraged to listen to standard recordings of the repertoire and to seek guidance from private instrument teachers.
Solo requirements and guidelines
For Flute, the following solo is required:
Mozart, Concerto in G major, first movement from the beginning to 12 measures before C.
Applicants will automatically be considered for GSYO and Flute Ensemble. Those wishing to be considered just for Flute Ensemble and not Youth Orchestra may play any solo.
For Violin, the following solos are suggested, not required:
Bruch Concerto, 1st mvt.
Mendelssohn Concerto, 1st mvt.
Bach A minor Concerto, 1st mvt.
Mozart G, A, or D concertos, 1st mvt.
Suzuki books 7 and up
(or a piece of comparable difficulty)
Please choose a section that is no more than 2 minutes in length.
For Horn, the following solos are suggested:
A movement from a concerto by Mozart, Richard Strauss, or Franz Strauss.
Please choose a section that is no more than 2 minutes in length.
For Percussion:
Prepare a short concert-style solo on the percussion instrument of your choice - snare drum, marimba, or timpani. Please choose a solo, movement, or section that is no more than two minutes in length.
For all other instruments:
No specific solo is required.

For Flute Ensemble:

For Youth Philharmonic:
• One major & one minor scale of your choice. Violinists who wish to be considered for Violin I in Youth Philharmonic should prepare three octaves; all others should prepare two octaves.
•A short piece of your choice, from Suzuki Book 4, the Vivaldi A minor concerto, or a piece of comparable difficulty
• Prepare for a short sightreading example.
For Youth Strings:
• One major & one minor scale of your choice
•A short piece of your choice
•Prepare for a short sightreading example.
For Allegro Strings:
• Prepare the piece you have played most recently. Auditions for Allegro Strings are friendly and informal; however, all prospective members of Allegro Strings must come to auditions.
