Entrance Auditions (2010 - 2011)
UPDATE, 7/24/10:
For GSYO auditionees, more specific orchestral excerpts, as well as
suggested violin and flute solo selections, are provided below.
Auditions for the 2010 - 2011 season will take place August 21 to Sept
1, 2010.
We will begin making reservations for individual times on August 2.
Audition Checklist
- Prepare the audition music. Prospective members should prepare the requirements for the ensemble they wish to join. The musical requirements for each ensemble are listed below.
- A $15 Audition Fee (cash or check payable to "Friends of the GSYO")is due at the time of audition.
- Please arrive 15 minutes before your audition time to check in and warm up.
- To save time at auditions, please complete your
paperwork in advance.
- One major & one minor scale of your choice (three octaves for violin, viola, and cello, two octaves for other instruments).
- A short solo selection or excerpt of your choice,
2-3 minutes in length.
- For Violin players auditioning for the GSYO, some suggested choices are:
- A portion of the 1st movement of Bruch, Mendelssohn, Bach a minor, or Mozart G, A, or D concertos.
- A selection from Suzuki Violin school, levels 7 and up.
- For Flute players auditioning for the GSYO,
some suggested choices are:
- Bach: 'Badinerie' from the Suite in b minor
- A portion of the 1st movement of Mozart: G

opening solo (to [37]), and hold steady pitch (A).

- Clarinet: Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique, 2nd mvmt, 13 after [26] to [27], and [29] to [33].
- Eb Clarinet: 5th mvmt [63] to 5 after [64]
- Bassoon: Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique, 1st mvmt, 7 after [11] – 11 after [12]. And 5th mvmt: [63] to 4 after [64].
- Horn: Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique: 2nd mvmt, 7 before [33] to [34].
- Trumpet: Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique, 4th mvmt,
[53] to [55].
- Trombone: Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique, 4th mvmt [56] to 6 after [57]
- Tuba: Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique, 5th Mvmt. 5 before [85] to the end.
- Percussion: Play a short excerpt on timpani, a short mallet solo of your choice, snare roll from pp to ff to pp. You may be asked to sightread, including rolls on tambourine and/or bass drum.
- Harp: Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique, Harp I part, 2nd mvmt,
opening to [23], and [32] to [33].
- Violin: Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique
• Mvt. I from [1] to [2], and from [17] to 10 before [19]
• Mvt. III from #44-46
• Mvt. II [28] to [29], both Violin I and II parts
- Viola: 2nd mvmt,
6 after [36] to the end. And 5th mvmt, 4 after [78] to [82]
- Cello: Berlioz:

- Double Bass:

- Auditionees may be asked to sightread.
For Youth Philharmonic:
· One major & one minor
scale of your choice. Violinists who wish to be considered for Violin I
in Youth Philharmonic should prepare three octaves; all others should
prepare two octaves.
· A short piece of your
choice
· Prepare for a short
sightreading example.
For Youth Strings:
· One major & one minor
scale of your choice
· A short piece of your
choice, from Suzuki Book 3 or a piece of comparable difficulty
· Prepare for a short
sightreading example.
(An applicant for GSYO may
also be considered for Youth Philharmonic or Youth Strings.)
For Flute Choir:
· Audition requirements are the same as for flutes for
GSYO. All flute applicants will automatically be considered for GSYO
and flute choir.
For Allegro Strings:
· Prepare the piece you have played most recently.
Auditions for Allegro Strings are friendly and informal; however, all
prospective members of Allegro Strings must come to auditions.
